Samsung S8000 Posted on: April 14, 2009
If you watched Android and tech blogs today you might have noticed the news presenting pictures of the new Samsung S8000 claiming it to be an Android phone. Sorry to burst the bubble on this one but unfortunately the S8000 it is not an Android Phone.
It all started on Russian reseller Euroset's website when they created a pre-order page for Samsung's new S8000, complete with full specks and a price of 470 Euros. The company soon deleted the webpage, but as allways tracks remained, like the this Google cache of the page: here. As you can see there is alot of text there, giving a full description of the phone, including most of the specks. Since my Russian is a little rusty (meaning i never knew it) here's an english translation thanks to Google Translate:
"GT-S8000 - a pleasant novelty from Samsung, the main feature of which is a modern graphical interface. No wonder the model is called Cube: In standby mode, you can browse through more than one "desktop", but a few. As if the brink of Cuba, which are helpful to you contacts, labels, links, notes, widgets, etc. In addition to the new interface, new boasts a thin shell (mnee 12 mm.) Chamber for 5 Mpiks with autofocus and flash, connector for 3.5 mm, an impressive amount of internal memory (2 GB) and juicy screen displaying 16 million colors.
Of course, this is not all that capable of S8000. There are a lot of apparatus "talent", which will be useful both for work and leisure. Among them are anti-surface display, and low power consumption, support the basic format of audio / video files, etc. For more information about the technical characteristics, you can at the bottom."

Pretty neat huh? You gotta love Google Translate right? WELL, not so fast!
The first that spotted this phone were the guys at iDNES.cz. As you can see it's written in Czech. Then came GSMarena.com that used the same Google Translate to make sense of the Czech article. And that's where the sistem failed:
The original text says: "Novinka by mohla být prvním samsungem s operačním systémem Google Android. Pravděpodobnější je ale vylepšené uživatelské prostředí TouchWiz.".
Which Google translates as: "News could be the first samsung with the operating system Google Android. It is more advanced but TouchWiz user interface.".
Not too smooth but it makes sense and it looks like they say it runs Google Android wich is more advanced than TouchWiz, right? WRONG!
It actually says: ""...this could have been the first Samsung Android phone. However, most likely, it runs on an upgraded TouchWiz..."
That's exactly the opposite. Also you might notice there is no mention of Android on the original page on Euroset.ru.
From GSMarena the news spreaded on all major mobile and Android blogs, but unfortunately we have to wait a little longer until we'll see a Samsung Android phone.
